Press Release

On April 1, 2021, New York State Police Financial Crimes Unit, in conjunction with New York State Police Saratoga, New York State Police Princetown, and the Schenectady County District Attorney’s Office, arrested 22-year-old Mathew R. Baldwin, of Malta, NY, for Grand Larceny 2nd degree and Identity Theft 1st degree, both felonies.

The months long investigation began in October 2020 when it was discovered Baldwin was using stolen identities to certify New York State Unemployment Insurance benefits. The investigation revealed Baldwin received more than $100,000 in fraudulent unemployment benefits that he used for his own personal benefit using the identities of several unsuspecting victims.

Baldwin was arraigned in Schenectady City Court and released to the supervision of probation, due to appear again in Schenctady City Court on April 15, 2021 at 1:30 P.M.

Anyone who believes they are a victim of New York State Unemployment Insurance fraud should report the fraudulent activity to the New York State Department of Labor. Please visit https://dol.ny.gov/report-fraud for details, or call 888-598-2077.
