The New York State Police joined the Department of Transportation on June 20, 2021 in Essex County for “Operation Hardhat”. The agencies work together to target reckless and distracted drivers in work zones.
The initiative took place in an active work zone on I-87 in the town of Chesterfield. During the initiative, troopers are in the work zone and dressed as DOT workers. The troopers are on the lookout for vehicle and traffic violations such as speeding, cellphone use while driving, seatbelt violations and failing to follow the “Move Over” Law.
A total of 22 tickets were issued:
- Speeding – 7
- Cell phone – 6
- Seatbelt – 2
- Other – 7
Motorists are urged to drive responsibly in work zones. Oftentimes the speed limit is reduced in work zones, please follow the posted signage. Move over a lane, when it is safe to do so, or whenever encountering workers along the side of the road, or when a vehicle is displaying red, white, blue, amber or green lights.
As a reminder, speeding fines are doubled in work zones and two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of your driver’s license.
This initiative continues throughout the construction season.
