UPDATE: On July 16, 2020, at 5:00 p.m. an autopsy was performed by Jefferson County Medical Examiner Dr. Samuel A. Livingstone. Doctor Livingstone determined the cause of death to be asphyxia due to warm water drowning. St. Lawrence County Coroner Kevin Crosby ruled the manner of death as accidental.
On July 15, 2020, at approximately 9 a.m. State Police investigated a boating accident which resulted in a drowning on the St. Lawrence River off of Indian Point Road in the town of Hammond. The victim, 28-year-old Cookie L. Brown, of Syracuse, fell into the St. Lawrence River when a canoe she was in capsized. Brown was not wearing a life-jacket. Her body was recovered by the State Police Underwater Recovery Team. She was pronounced deceased and removal of her body was authorized by St. Lawrence County Coroner Kevin Crosby to Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center in Ogdensburg, NY, where an autopsy will be scheduled for July 16, 2020.
Another occupant in the canoe made it safely back to shore.
Other agencies assisting at the scene included the US Coast Guard, Alexandria Bay Rescue, Hammond Rescue, and the Royal Canadian Air Force Unit.
