On October 17, 2020, at approximately 10:20 p.m., State Police responded to 4326 Main Street in Port Henry for a report of a structure fire. Troopers assisted the Port Henry Fire Department with evacuating residents from the apartment building. However, one resident, 59-year-old Mary A. Gutreuter, was located deceased inside her apartment after the flames were extinguished.

Gutreuter’s body was removed to the Albany Medical Center where an autopsy was performed on October 20, 2020, by Dr. Michael Sikirica. Dr. The cause of death was determined to be asphyxia due to smoke inhalation. The manner of death was deemed accidental.

State and County Fire Investigators are assisting with the investigation, which is ongoing at this time. However, the fire is believed to be accidental in nature.
