State Police investigate fatal Knox crash

 

 

 

 

On February 1, 2023, at about 1:35 a.m. State Police of New Scotland observed a vehicle driving erratically on Washington Avenue Extension in Albany, NY. The vehicle matched the description of a suspect vehicle involved in an earlier pursuit in Colonie, NY. Troopers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the operator, later identified as Jason S. Benn, 49 of Cohoes, NY, failed to comply, and a pursuit was initiated. During the pursuit, Benn struck multiple parked vehicles, and at 1:44 a.m., the pursuit was terminated due to public safety concerns. Shortly after the pursuit was terminated,  Troopers located Benn and the vehicle crashed in the area of Knox-Gallupville Road in Knox, NY.  During the crash,  Benn  sustained severe injuries and was transported to Albany Medical Center, where he was later pronounced deceased. The preliminary investigation has determined  Benn  did not have permission to operate the vehicle and was in possession of narcotics. The investigation is ongoing.
