On September 24, 2021, at approximately 3:00 pm, State Police responded to a three car crash on I-99 in the town of Erwin, Steuben County. 


A preliminary investigation revealed Patricia Charwat, 73, of Horseheads, entered I-99 northbound at exit 8 in the wrong direction. While traveling south in the northbound lanes, Charwat struck a vehicle in the passing lane head-on. That vehicle was driven by Mark Scott, 71, of West Deptford, NJ. Charwat then struck a third vehicle in the northbound driving lane driven by Melinda Phillips, 42, of Corning. 

Charwat was airlifted and Phillips was transported by ambulance to Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital to be treated for their injuries. 

Scott and his passenger were airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital to be treated for their injuries. 

The investigation into the crash continues. 

I-99 was closed for approximately two and a half hours for clean up and to clear traffic.
