UPDATE: On April 29, 2021, at approximately 1:42 PM, SP Riverside patrols were dispatched to a two-vehicle fatal collision, which occurred on Sunrise Highway near exit 63 in the town of Southampton. A preliminary investigation revealed a 2016 Chevrolet Malibu struck the rear end of a 2011 Toyota Corolla in the eastbound lane. The operator of the Malibu, Maria E. Rivera, 39, Yaphank, NY, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center. The operator of the Corolla, Sister Josephine Dagostino, 85, Bellmore, NY, died at the scene.

With the roadway blocked by the fatal collision, a separate collision occurred when a tractor-trailer operated by John Bieber, 58, of Baiting Hollow, NY, slowed in traffic and was struck in the rear by three vehicles.  The three vehicles involved were driven by Olga Allende-Hernandez, 53, of Calverton, NY, Adrian Flores-Garcia, 45, Elmhurst, NY, and Richard Nigro, 88, Center Moriches, NY. Flores-Garcia and Allende-Hernandez were transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigations into the crashes are ongoing.

On April 29, 2021 at approximately 1:42 pm, State Police were called to a two vehicle crash on Sunrise Highway eastbound near exit 63 in the town of Southampton.

A preliminary investigation revealed one vehicle rear ended another vehicle.

One driver in the crash was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, the other driver died at the scene. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

Shortly after the fatal crash, another crash occurred involving a tractor trailer and three other vehicles.

A preliminary investigation into that crash revealed that as a tractor trailer slowed for the previous accident, it was rear-ended by three other vehicles.

Two people involved in that crash suffered non-life threatening injuries and were also transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center.

The investigation into both crashes is ongoing.
