PRESS RELEASE

Herkimer, NY – On June 17, 2020, at approximately 6:33 a.m., State Police were dispatched to a serious accident which occurred on I-90 westbound at mile marker 220.8, in the town of Herkimer.

The investigation at the scene revealed that Eusterio A. Rodriguez Martinez, 31, of Bronx, NY, was operating a 2004 Peterbilt tractor trailer westbound, and for an unknown reason, exited the roadway to the south.  The tractor trailer struck the center median and overturned, blocking the westbound left lane and both eastbound lanes.  Rodriguez Martinez was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Herkimer County Coroner.  He was removed to Albany Medical Center pending an autopsy.

A passenger in the tractor trailer, Manaury Caraballo, 32, of Manhattan, NY, was in the sleeper birth at the time of the crash and was transported to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of a 2017 Peterbilt box truck, Johnny T. Burke, 44, of East Syracuse, NY, traveling eastbound, was struck by the opened door of the overturned trailer causing minor damage to the vehicle.  Burke was not injured.

Troopers out of SP Schuyler were assisted on scene by Troop D, Herkimer BCI, Troop D CRU (Collision Reconstruction Unit), and Troop T CVEU (Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit).

A traffic detour was in effect for several hours diverting all eastbound traffic to exit the Thruway at exit 31 (Utica), until the accident reconstruction could be completed.  The investigation is ongoing; however, no charges will apply.
