PRESS RELEASE

On Friday, June 24, 2022, Troop NYC troopers, investigators, and the Troop NYC Special Investigations Unit participated in a multi-agency effort to combat the proliferation of fraudulent registrations following the inception of cashless tolls in New York City.

State Police along with NYPD Highway, NYPD Patrol Borough Bronx, NYS Department of Motor Vehicles, and the MTA Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority conducted an enforcement campaign that led to the seizure of 14 fraudulently registered vehicles, eight criminal arrests and the issuance of over 50 tickets for violations of the Vehicle and Traffic Law.

As part of this effort, a 2019 Alfa Romeo with suspicious license plates was detained and an investigation by Troopers, SIU Investigators, and DMV field investigators determined the vehicle had fraudulent license plates, forged Vehicle Identification Numbers, and was reported stolen out of Florida in 2021. The operator was charged with the felonies of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 3rd, Forgery 2nd, and Illegal Possession of a VIN.
