Each year, the State Police honor the fallen, and all deceased State Police members at the annual Memorial Service.
Since 1917, the New York State Police have lost 156 members in the line of duty.
This year, the State Police will recognize seven members: Sergeant James J. Monda, Trooper Joseph J. Mecca, Jr., Colonel William J. DeBlock, Jr., Trooper Michael R. O’Donnell, Zone Sergeant James G. Sweeney, Trooper Scott P. Enser, and Major Rodrick C. Covington.
On August 22, 2021, Sergeant Monda died during his assignment to a marine patrol on the Great Sacandaga Lake.
On December 2, 2020, Trooper Mecca died of illness stemming from his assignment to the World Trade Center site following the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001.
On December 20, 2020, Colonel DeBlock, Jr., died of illness stemming from his assignment to the World Trade Center site following the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001.
On December 24, 2020, Trooper O’Donnell died of illness stemming from his assignment to the World Trade Center site following the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001.
On March 6, 2021, Zone Sergeant Sweeney died of illness stemming from his assignment to the World Trade Center site following the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001.
On March 20, 2021, Trooper Enser died from an illness stemming from his assignment to the World Trade Center site following the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001.
On March 31, 2022, Major Covington died from an illness stemming from his assignment to the World Trade Center site following the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001.
