Van Buren, NY – On January 24, 2020, at approximately 10:20 p.m., State Police attempted to stop a vehicle on I-90 in the town of Van Buren for a vehicle and traffic violation.  The vehicle struck the Troop car as it sped off and a pursuit ensued.  The driver of the vehicle attempted to exit the Thruway at exit 39 and crashed into the median.  The driver, Paul A. Johnson, 32, of Syracuse, NY, was determined to be intoxicated.    
Johnson was taken into custody, transported, and processed at SP Syracuse where he refused to give a breath sample.  Additionally, Johnson has two prior DWI convictions within the last 10 years and as a result, he was charged with Driving While Intoxicated; a Class D Felony.  Further investigation revealed that the license plates on the vehicle were reported stolen.
Johnson was also charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation 1st degree; a Class E Felony, Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle 3rd degree; a Class A Misdemeanor, Reckless Endangerment 2nd degree; a Class A Misdemeanor, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 5th degree; a Class A Misdemeanor, Reckless Driving; an Unclassified Misdemeanor, and numerous vehicle and traffic violations.
Johnson was transported to the Onondaga Justice Center to be held for arraignment in the Town of Van Buren Court.  No return court date available at this time.
