The State Police responded to a fatal crash on the Southern/Heckscher State Parkway

PRESS RELEASE

 

On February 6, 2023, just after 10:30 PM, the State Police responded to a crash on the southbound Southern/Heckscher State Parkway between exits 44 and 45 in the town of Islip, Suffolk County. 

 

Preliminary investigation revealed, a 2010 Hyundai Sonata, driven by Roy Nelson, 73 of Holbrook, NY, was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes on the Southern/Heckscher State Parkway when he struck a 2020 Tesla head on. 

 

 

Nelson was taken to South Shore University Hospital but later died of his injuries.  The driver of the Tesla was also taken to South Shore University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. 

 

Preliminary investigation reveals Mr. Nelson may have suffered a medical emergency.

 

The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Collision Reconstruction Unit, and the Forensic Identification Unit all responded to the scene.

 

This investigation is ongoing, and the State Police is asking for any witnesses or anyone with information to call (631) 756-3300.
