The State Police in Alexandria Bay is investigating a pickup truck/horse and buggy collision that occurred August 19, 2021, at approximately 8:20 p.m. on State Route 12 in front of the Big M, in the town of Alexandria, Jefferson County.  

The initial investigation indicates that an Amish horse and buggy attempted to enter the northbound lane of State Route 12 from the parking of the Big M and failed to yield the right of way to a northbound pickup truck.  The horse and buggy were struck by the pickup and the two occupants of the buggy were ejected from the buggy.   The two occupants of the buggy were transported to Samaritan Medical Center by Alexandria Bay Ambulance and Thousand Island Rescue.  The operator of the pickup truck was not injured. 

The New York State Police were assisted at the scene by the Alexandria Bay Fire Department and the Clayton Police Department.

Occupants of the buggy:

  • Peter P. Hershberger, age 36 from Hammond, NY was treated and released.
  • Annie Hershberger, age 29 from Hammond, NY has been transferred to Upstate University Hospital and is listed in critical condition.

Operator of the pickup:

  • Peter M. Hummer, age 80 from Redwood, NY

The investigation is continuing.
