The New York State Police and the New York State Department of Transportation have teamed up again this year for “Operation Hardhat”.
The operation is a joint initiative to crack down and reduce reckless behavior through work zones. The operation highlights the importance of safe driving in construction, maintenance and emergency operations along state highway.
Troopers were present on two of the many work zones in Troop C this week. They were dressed as highway maintenance workers and observed violators who were speeding, on their cell phone or failing to follow the Move Over Law. Nearly 60 tickets were issued during two details on July 14 and July 16.
On July 14, 2020 troopers were on State Highway 17 in the town of Windsor. Members of the DOT were working on a bridge on 17 west over Shedd Road. A total of 37 tickets were issued.

On July 16, 2020 troopers were on Interstate 81 in the city of Cortland. Members from Economy Paving were working on the roadway on 81 south just past exit 11. A total of 30 tickets were issued.

- 6 other violations
On July 21, 2020 troopers were on Interstate 88 in the town of Worcester. Workers were working on the roadway on 88 east at exit 19 (Worcester). A total of 17 tickets were issued.

- 4 other violations
On July 30, 2020 troopers were on Interstate 88 in the town of Sidney. DOT workers were patching the roadway on Interstate 88 just past exit 11. A total of 11 tickets were issued.

- 3 speeding
- 1 other violations
The Operation Hardhat initiative began in July and continues through the summer construction season. Last year, over 1,000 tickets were issued in the state of New York.
