PRESS RELEASE

New York State Police at Endwell are on Kentucky Avenue in the town of Union after an operator of a roll off container truck for garbage and recycling left the load ramp in an elevated position after dropping off a container.  When the driver entered Kentucky Avenue from a parking lot, the load ramp height exceeded the legal height of 13 feet and 6 inches and caught on utility wires. Two utility poles were yanked to the ground, several transformers caught on fire causing the asphalt to melt.

The driver of the dump truck was briefly trapped in the truck because of the live wires.  Once the power to the lines was cut, he was able to exit the truck.  The driver did not suffer any injuries.

Kentucky Avenue between North Street and East Main Street is currently closed.  Endwell Fire is on scene and members from NYSEG are assessing the area.  Traffic is being directed by NSYP, Endwell Fire and NYSDOT.  Many residents are without power and several traffic lights are out.  As a reminder, treat any intersection as a four-way stop and look in both directions before crossing it if the traffic light is out.  There is no time frame when power will be restored but it is believed that it will be out for an extended period of time.
