UPDATE 2/11/21 4pm: An investigation at the scene revealed that the garbage truck was traveling west on State Highway 17 in the town of Windsor when it crashed then rolled.
The investigation further revealed due to an unsafe speed and unsafe lane change the operator left the south shoulder striking the guiderail. The truck continued through the guiderail and into the median where it struck an earth embankment. The truck continued in a westerly direction in the median where the tractor became detached from the trailer and the trailer overturned and came to rest in the median between the over passes for State Line Rd.
Approximately two-hundred feet of guiderail and a utility pole with wires were damaged. The New York State Department of Transportion was on scene to assess damage to the guiderail and bridge.
The driver, a 64-year-old male of Bronx, NY was transported to Wilson Hospital. The truck is registered to Lae Transport Corp in Newark, NJ.
On February 11, 2021, just after 11:00 a.m., New York State Police at Deposit and Binghamton and the New York State Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit responded to a report of a tractor trailer rollover on State Route 17 in Damascus (Town of Windsor).
No other vehicle are involved. The driver was transported to a local hospital. One lane of 17 east bound and one lane of 17 west bound is closed near exit 81.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
