Acting Major R. Christopher West
Troop G Commander
On June 12, 2020, State Police in Cobleskill arrested 35-year-old Deshawn T. Allen and 22-year-old Austin K. Wakefield, both of Kalamazoo, MI, for Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 3rd degree (D felony) and Obstruction of Governmental Administration 2nd degree (A misdemeanor).
Shortly after 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, state police observed a speeding vehicle on I-88 eastbound in the town of Richmondville. When the Trooper, who was westbound, turned around to initiate a traffic stop, the vehicle accelerated to a high rate of speed. The vehicle exited the interstate at exit 21, turned onto Hite Rd in Warnerville, and illegally passed multiple cars. It was located abandoned in a hedgerow on Mountain Crest Road a short time later.
The vehicle, a 2013 Ford Fusion, was determined to have been reported stolen from the state of Michigan, and evidence recovered at the scene lead troopers to believe that the occupants were Allen and Wakefield.
Due to the concern that the suspects may attempt to take another car, a reverse 911 call was made to residents in the area informing them of the police activity.
Troopers were able to make contact with an associate of the duo, who convinced the men to turn themselves in to police. They were located on West Fulton Road shortly before 1:30 a.m. and taken into custody.
Both men were arraigned by Carlisle Town Court. Allen was remanded to Schoharie County Jail without bail, and Wakefield was remanded in lieu of $15,000 cash or $45,000 bond. Both are due in RIchmondville Town Court on a later date.
Thank you to the Schoharie County Sheriff’s Office and Schoharie County Emergency Management for their assistance.
