On July 19, 2021, State Police in Herkimer conducted a vehicle and traffic stop on State Route 5 and Newport Road for V&T violation and interviewed the operator, Lucas Cosgrove. During this interview, the Trooper observed new DeWalt batteries on the passenger floor and under the seat as well as a brand-new toolset on the back seat.
When the Trooper went to his patrol vehicle to check both individuals, the male passenger ran off behind the building and into the woods. He was later identified as Ronald J. Bergum, and he had multiple arrest warrants.
During further investigation, Trooper was able to determine that Cosgrove’s driving privilege was suspended in the NYS. His vehicle was unregistered and uninsured. Investigation revealed that Bergum and Cosgrove were coming back from Amsterdam, Fulton County, where they stole 7 brand-new DeWalt batteries from Lowes valued at approximately $984.00. They also took two Makita drills worth approximately $400.00 from the Tractor Supply store in Amsterdam NY as well as an ICON toolset worth approximately $150.00 from the Harbor Freight Tools store. All three stores were investigating this larceny at the time of the stop.
Lucas A. Cosgrove, age 21 from Utica, NY was arrested for Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 5th degree, a class “A” misdemeanor. He was issued an Appearance Ticket and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Schuyler Court.
Ronald J. Bergum Jr., age 39 from Utica, NY was arrested for Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 5th degree (class “A” misdemeanor), False Personation (class “B” misdemeanor). Bergum had five active warrants from Oneida County for Larcenies. He was turned over to the New Hartford Police Department for further charges as well as Oneida County Sheriff Department.
