***UPDATE*** 

On September 2, 2022, New York State Police arrested Maleek U. Phillips, age 37, from Albany, NY following an assault on a bus on Interstate 87 in the town of Newburgh. Phillips was charged with Attempted Murder 2nd, Assault 1st, Assault 2nd, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Phillips was arraigned in front of Justice Anika Mohammed in the City of Newburgh Court. He was remanded to Orange County Jail. He was indicted today, September 2, 2022, by a Grand Jury on the same charges.

Newburgh, NY - On Friday, August 26, 2022, at about 7:00 p.m., State Police responded to a report of an assault that occurred on a bus traveling southbound on I-87, in the town of Newburgh.

The commercial bus was traveling from Albany to New York City, with approximately 30 passengers on board when a physical altercation began between two male passengers.  The bus pulled over onto the shoulder at mile marker 60.1, where Troopers responded and were assisted by the Town of Newburgh Police.

Both males sustained injuries as a result of the fight, one of which is the suspect who is in custody at this time.  The victim was treated on the scene for non-life-threatening injuries.

All lanes remained open during the incident and there is no impact on Thruway traffic in the area at this time.  The investigation is ongoing and more information will be released as it becomes available.
