UPDATE: A vehicle operated by 73-year-old Richard R. Apelt of Jay, NY, was traveling east on State Route 86, when it struck a vehicle traveling west operated by Caroline M. Kessell, 19, of Doylestown, Pennsylvania.  Richard Apelt’s wife, Susan P. Apelt, 64, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Richard Apelt was transported to the University of Vermont Healthcare Network at CVPH in Plattsburgh with a head injury. Kessell was not injured. Susan Apelt was removed to CVPH where an autopsy will be performed.
This crash remains under investigation.


Original release: On December 18, 2019, at approximately 1:52 p.m., State Police responded to a two-car crash on State Route 86 in the town of North Elba. One person is deceased and one person has been transported to an area hospital for a head injury. The crash remains under investigation.

The roadway was shut down from 2 p.m. until approximately 4:30 p.m.
