UPDATE: An autopsy was conducted on December 16, 2019, at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital by Dr. Samuel Livingston in which the deceased was identified as 19-year-old William L. Chase of Potsdam. The cause of death was determined to be a cervical vertebrae fracture and smoke inhalation. The manner of death was determined to be accidental.


Original release: On December 13, 2019, at approximately 10:12 p.m. State Police responded to Old Potsdam Parishville Road in the town of Parishville, for a report of a car that had struck a tree off the roadway. Upon State Police arrival to the scene, the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames with the operator trapped inside. Parishville Fire Department was on scene to extinguish the fire. After the flames were extinguished, St. Lawrence County Coroner June Wood pronounced the operator deceased and authorized removal of the body to the Canton-Potsdam Hospital where an autopsy is scheduled for December 16, 2019, at 5:30 p.m. The identity of the driver is pending autopsy.
