UPDATE: On April 1, 2020, an autopsy was conducted at the University of Vermont Health Network at Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital by Doctor Laura Schned. Doctor Schned determined the cause of death to be smoke inhalation.  The fire is not deemed to be suspicious however, the investigation is continuing.



On March 31, 2020, at approximately 1:00 am, Clinton County 911 reported an active structure fire at 23 Peaceful Way, apartment 4, in the town of Plattsburgh.  Members of the New York State Police, Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, South Plattsburgh Fire Department, City of Plattsburgh Fire Department and CVPH Ambulance responded to the scene.  Clinton County deputies made entry into the apartment and removed 61-year-old resident, Michael A. Malpass, who was located unresponsive.  Deputies attempted life-saving measures, however, Malpass was pronounced deceased at the scene by Clinton County Coroner Chad Deans. His body was removed to the University of Vermont Healthcare Network at CVPH in Plattsburgh where an autopsy will be conducted on April 1, 2020.   State Police, New York State Fire Investigators and Clinton County Fire Investigators continue to investigate.
