A preliminary investigation has determined that Washington County Sheriff’s Deputy Cori Winch, 24, was on patrol working an overnight shift at the time of the crash. Deputy Winch was operating a marked Sheriff’s patrol unit on his way to the Salem station, and was not in emergency operation. He was traveling south on State Route 40 when his patrol vehicle crossed the center line and struck a northbound vehicle operated by 72-year-old Susan J. Harrington of Argyle, head-on. It is not believed that speed or alcohol were contributing factors in the crash.
Harrington was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy has been scheduled for tomorrow at Glens Falls Hospital.
Deputy Winch sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to and treated at Glens Falls Hospital.  He has since been released.
State Police were assisted by the Argyle Fire Department, Argyle EMS, Fort Edward Fire Department, and Cossayuna Fire Department.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation, any updates will be posted to the newsroom.
