State Police confirm the identity of the driver killed in the tractor-trailer crash on the Northway to be that of 61-year-old Scott W. Rorapaugh of York Haven,PA.

Shortly before 3:30 a.m. on July 17, 2019, A Hannaford tractor-trailer carrying produce, driven by 50-year-old Everon J. Meadows of Springfield, MA, was traveling northbound on I-87. Meadows fell asleep while operating the vehicle and drifted off the eastern shoulder of the roadway in the area of exit 18. He then struck a guiderail, lost control, and the tractor-trailer rolled onto its passenger side with the cab of the vehicle coming to rest in the right-hand lane of travel. Meadows was not injured.
A second driver, whose name will be released pending forensic identification, was operating a New Penn tractor-trailer that was carrying fertilizer and paper products. He was also traveling northbound on I-87 and was in the right-hand lane of travel. The unidentified driver struck the cab of Meadow’s vehicle ripping the cab from the trailer.  The cab of Meadows’ vehicle and the New Penn tractor-trailer became fully engulfed in flames.
Meadows was outside of the tractor-trailer at the time of the collision and was unharmed. The driver of the New Penn tractor-trailer was killed. The investigation into this incident is ongoing and the identity of the second driver will be released on the newsroom when it becomes available.

UPDATE- State Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed this morning’s fatal tractor-trailer accident to contact SP Queenbury at 518-745-1035.

At approximately 3:30 am this morning, State Police responded to an accident involving two tractor-trailers on I-87 northbound in the area of exit 18. One fatality has been confirmed.
On scene investigation has revealed that a disabled tractor-trailer was struck from behind by another northbound tractor-trailer. The driver of the disable tractor-trailer was not injured. The driver of the northbound tractor-trailer was killed in the collision. I-87 northbound has been detoured with traffic exiting at exit18 and then entering back onto I-87 northbound at exit 18. The detour will remain until the vehicles are removed.

Investigation is underway, updates will be posted on the newsroom.
