UPDATE - December 5th

Mr. Gaines has been extradited back to New York and is currently incarcerated at the Suffolk County Correctional Facility. Mr. Gaines will be processed at the Riverside Barracks today for the charges of Murder 2nd and Burglary 1st, and will be arraigned at Suffolk County Court in Riverhead either today or tomorrow.


UPDATE - August 22nd

Mr. Gaines has been located and is currently incarcerated in the Pitt County Detention Center, Greenville, North Carolina, after being arrested by the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office for breaking and entering of a motor vehicle. Mr. Gaines is being held without bond on a New York parole violation fugitive warrant and will be transported back to New York after the extradition process has been completed.  Mr. Gaines is a suspect in the shooting homicide on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation from August 16, 2019.

UPDATE - August 17th

The victim has been identified as Mr. Mtundo Vanterpool, 43 years of age, who resided on the Shinnecock reservation,  but was not a member. 


State Police are asking for information regarding the location of Mr. Michael Gaines, 42 years of age, pictured below who also resided on the Shinnecock reservation but was not a member.  It is believed he has information regarding this investigation.

Suffolk County Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 fast cash reward for information leading to an arrest in connection with this homicide.
The fast cash reward will be issued within 72 hours to anyone who provides the information that leads to an arrest. Anyone with information about these incidents can contact Suffolk County Crime Stoppers to submit an anonymous tip by calling 1-800-220-TIPS, texting “SCPD” and your message to “CRIMES” (274637) or by email at www.tipsubmit.com. All calls, text messages and emails will be kept confidential.

On Friday, August 16th, 2019, at approximately 5:35am, the New York State Police received a call of a shooting on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation, located in Suffolk County, NY.  One victim was pronounced deceased, with an apparent gunshot wound.  The New York State Police are actively investigating this homicide.
The New York State Police is requesting that anyone who may have witnessed this incident contact State Police Farmingdale at (631) 756-3300.  All calls will remain confidential.
