Troop T Commander

Coxsackie, NY – On June 12, 2021, at approximately 6:35 p.m., State Police attempted to stop a vehicle on I-87 in the town of Ulster for a vehicle and traffic violation.  The driver failed to comply, and a brief pursuit ensued.  The pursuit was terminated when the vehicle exited the Thruway at the Saugerties exit.

A short time later, Troopers observed the suspect vehicle, which was a BMW 750 Series, traveling northbound at mile marker 134.  Troopers attempted to stop the BMW which failed to comply again and led State Police on another chase.  The driver made an illegal U-turn to avoid a stationary patrol car and continued south on I-87.

During the pursuit, the BMW sideswiped another car while attempting to pass on the shoulder, causing property damage only, and eventually pulled over south of the New Baltimore Service Area.  The driver, Joseph A. Coghlan, 38, of Chesapeake, VA, was taken into custody without incident and transported to SP Albany.

Coghlan was charged with Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle in the 3rd degree and Reckless Endangerment; both Class A Misdemeanors and Reckless Driving; an Unclassified Misdemeanor.  He was arraigned before the Town of Coxsackie Court and was released.  A return court date of June 28, 2021 at 2:00 p.m has been set.
